The Chincoteague Pony is a hearty, healthy, large, sport pony used for hunter/jumper, english, western, trail, driving and pleasure mounts for both children and adults.

In 1994, the ponies became an official breed when the Chincoteague Pony Association was born.  The CPA's membership is open to all pony lovers, you do not have to own a pony to join, and all dues go to care for the wild pony herd.

~History of the Chincoteague Pony~

According to legend, the horses came to live on Assateague Island, a small island off the coast of Virginia and Maryland, when a Spanish ship carrying wild mustangs sunk off the coast.  The surviving horses swam ashore making Assateague their home, living off marsh grasses.

The island is now a National Park and the horses are owned by the Chincoteague Fire Department.  Once a year they round up the herd and swim them across the channel from Assateague to Chincoteague where a number of foals are auctioned to keep the island herd number in balance and raise money for the Fire Department.

Many people recognize the Chincoteague Pony from the book "Misty Of Chincoteague" written by Marguerite Henry, in 1947.

We are proud to present our herd of Chincoteague Ponies! Please come in and look around.
